Cultural Translation as a Multidirectional Process in the Seventeenth-Century Madurai Mission

Abstract In the seventeenth-century missionary context of South India, Jesuit Roberto Nobili (1577–1656) engaged in a multi-directional process translation, translating his Catholic mission, doctrine, and literature for Tamil audience adapting it to local beliefs, practices, Roman context. Adopting theories from translation studies (Frege, Nida, Lefevere Venuti), this paper suggests model “cultural translation” not only as metaphor but an analytical tool. Straddling binary notion orthodoxy-unorthodoxy, mechanism pursues two goals: (1) uncovers role translations construction religions social identities; (2) applies theoretical framework illuminate historical missions India beyond. doing so, contributes analysis transculturality challenges traditional master narrative homogeneous Christianity.
